I am in the shittiest of moods this morning, but not sure I wanna spread my vitriol all over facebook, so I'll post here instead, haha.

Dear roofers who feel the need to start pounding and drilling on the roof a full HOUR before any of the 150 people sleeping in the building are likely awake and before the sun is even up: I hate you all. Personally. As human beings. You are bad people.

Also, dear shitty drivers: if you make a mistake, like going into the turn lane when you meant to go straight, don’t hold up the turn lane while you try to get back in the straight lane and then cut the straight lane off when you get sick of waiting. Suck it the fuck up, turn, and circle around the damn block like a safe, considerate driver. It’s not that hard.

Okay, that's my beef for this morning. Now to fall asleep into my keyboard while I try to look like I am working. *so exhausted*

So Chris was telling me today about some coworker he stopped speaking to because of me. Occasionally I go over to Neiman's to have lunch with Chris, and I guess some girl coworker was asking why I wear my Burberry trench all the time, and saying something about me wearing it with un-hemmed pants.

On the one hand, nuts to her, because I paid out the ass for that thing, so of course I'm going to wear it all the time (plus, its a bloody trench coat - its not like I'm wearing the same shirt everyday), and on the other hand, its kind of nice to have someone in your life who will cut off all ties to another person just because they said something bad (even if trivial) about you. :)

I think I learned a valuable lesson tonight in seizing the day, telling people how you feel about them, and not regretting it regardless of the outcome.

Seriously, I need to start doing this more often...

So it's the cover art time of year at work and I recently emailed this artist about using a piece of their work on the cover of a book. Now, just *looking* at the art, which is pretty political in nature, I just had this feeling that it might end up being a problem. Well, here was his response to me:

"Could you find another image which is not so literal?
World is becoming more bi-racial, can you select the image that reflects the fact?"

Grrr. No! We like *this* one. I hate it when the artists start philosophizing like this. Of course its their art and they have every right to say no, but please just say "no" then. Maybe this is a "no" - I'm not entirely sure. I think I'll ask for my boss's advice on this one, because I'm not sure the best way to respond, or if I even should respond. I'm not about to get into a politicized debate with some artist about how best to market our book.

In other news, my boss called me into his office yesterday - one of those things where you're like, "uhhh, is this gonna be a good thing or a bad thing?" Well, it was good! He asked me if I wanted to attend my first big conference in his stead, so they will be flying me out to New Orleans in May for a conference! ...oooh, just typing it sounds so fancy. I never thought I would have a job where jet-setting around the country would be part of the gig. Right now I'm just excited, but I'm sure as it draws closer I'll become increasingly terrified at the prospect of representing the press and meeting with authors. I know its a good thing though - a good way to get out there and start being less awkward and more professional... Never been to N'Orleans, either, so that should be interesting.

Why do I only seem to post in my journal anymore when I've bought something? Eh, no matter. I had planned on buying a new pair of basic black shoes this weekend to replace my current ones that are worn out, but ended up going on a total shoe bender and bought four pairs of shoes. :D I've never been much of a shoe person before and didn't really get the appeal, but lately, it's like shoes are really *speaking to me.* Ha. I got:

These, but in black:

Things have been pretty quiet around here otherwise. Just starting to think of furnishing the apartment and getting things ready for then. I need to buy a computer, and my dad has agreed to sell me the car that he's been letting me drive for the past 3 years anyways. I think the main thing we need now is a table and some chairs.

I'm pretty excited for halloween, though I'm sad that the haunted soap factory sold out - I really wanted to go. Not sure what we'll actually do on halloween. I've got my cubicle at work all decorated up with fake spiderwebs, skull and pumpkin lights, and kleenex ghosts hanging from the ceiling. I think I'm the only person in the office who decorated, but I think everyone enjoys it. :D

It's been a pretty decent weekend here. Yesterday I got up and chopped most of my hair off - it's just been getting shorter and shorter this summer. I just gravitate between wanting it really long and wanting it really short - but one of those options requires years of patience and annoyance, and the other requires an afternoon and some scissors. The result:

It's a little faux-hawkey now, but I'm generally digging it. I also got my lip pierced about a month ago, which you can kind of see in the picture. I need to go in and get the bar shortened soon.

Then I headed out to the Edina area. Stopped at Patrick's Bakery, Jamba, and Anthropologie. I finally ordered some bedding from them that I've been eying for some time - hopefully my last big purchase for a little while. It's this bedding, only I got it in ivory instead of purple:

I was planning an epic bike ride for today, but it is waaay too muggy out for that. I've just been sitting around, playing Banjo-Kazooie and trying to catch the caterpillars in the act of changing. One guy was getting ready to go and hanging upside down. I walked away for about 20 minutes and he had changed by the time I got back. Sneaky little bugger.

A few pictures belowCollapse )

I think my mother has officially gone overboard. We have 22 monarch chrysalis (chrysili??) in our critter cage right now, plus 9 other catepillars still getting ready. When my mom changes the milkweed out at night the branches are completely stripped bare. Maybe pictures tomorrow.

It was a bit of a long week - I dogsat at my aunt's for the week down in the cities. It was a much shorter drive to work in the morning, but I didn't sleep well. The house was way too hot to sleep in without the AC units and fans on, and way too loud to sleep with them. Plus they had a sleep number bed, which I found to be rather crappy.

Work was fine though. A bit quiet, but I finished up three manuscripts and felt rather accomplished. Still absolutely adoring what I do each and every day. :D

Being on my own in someone else's house for the week did really make me want to be out on my own though. I'm slowly saving up, but my weakness for pretty dresses is probably hindering my apartment fundage. I should probably curtail the spending for awhile, but this is like...the one time in my life that I actually have a good salary and simultaneously have very few bills and responsibilities. It's hard not to milk that, but I know I would probably appreciate independence even more.

Anyways, I think it's time to go catch up on lost sleep.

So up until now, this Mary Magdalene dress, for me, was always "The one that got away."

I've always lusted after it after it came out a few years ago (and I think it's been rereleased as well?) but was never able to get my hands on it. Then for awhile it kept popping up on Yahoo Japan auctions, but it always went for a rather high price and with fees involved, it was more than I wanted to pay. Eventually it just stopped showing up there.

...But it finally popped up again the other day, and now it's mine!!! And I can't believe I was the only one who bid on it - I got it for much cheaper than I was expecting. I guess no one else wants it anymore, lol.

So do any of you guys have an item that was "the one that got away" that you just really regret missing? What was it? Are you still searching for it?

So I just received some updated acknowledgments from an author, and I got a mention. D'aawwww. I'm sure this happens a lot as an editorial assistant (I see the other assistants mentioned all the time in the books that come out) but this is my first one. *sniff*
